Media Ethics - TheNeedleDrop youtube channel - 3/20

EVERYONE has an agenda. This is one of the first things I learned at the University of North Texas in the journalism track. In my introduction to media writing class, we were always taught to fact check to maintain credibility. One of my favorite modern Hatchetjobs to discuss is written by music website The FadeR. The subject of the piece was popular music critic, Anthony Fantano. The article was written about Fantano's interview with internet comedian Sam Hyde. For those who are not familiar with Fantano's work, the music critic is one of the internet's most acclaimed music commentators. The youtube channel has north of 2 million subscribers, and continues to thrive today.

In the 2017 article, The article starts out by addressing Fantano's 2nd youtube channel titled "That is the plan." The channel was made originally for Fantano to post humorous content about music and other subjects while keeping his main channel for his regular content. There is a lot of content on the channel that discusses politics and satirizes current events. The channel in question was accused of having alt-right content by The Fader, who condemned the channel for having internet memes with supposedly alt right content. Fantano responded to these claims saying that these videos were purely produced for humor. Fantano went on to say that he is historically against these concepts of alt right politics, and that the video was made for satire. One of the most notable videos on the channel is about now deceased rapper XXXTENTACION, whom Fantano always gave overhwheminly negative reviews. The named rapper is known for a lot of controversy surrounding domestic violence and misogyny and has been rightfully condemned by the public. Fantano parodied the rapper in one of these meme videos and was accused of making humor about the violence of the rapper's actions, which Fantano responded by saying he was merely making fun of the fans that tolerate this behavior.

Perhaps the most important part of the article, The Fader addresses Fantano's interview with internet comedian Sam Hyde. For those unfamilar, Hyde is an internet comedian who had a show on Adult Swim which was subsequently canceled when Hyde made racist comments on social media. Fantano posted snip its of the interview on his response video of him cautioning Hyde to not say things of this nature on the air, to which Hyde subsequently ignored.

After this instance, Fantano deleted the Thatistheplan channel and demonitzed the channel. To tie this together about the ethics of Journalism, I feel like in order to target someone as part of a piece of journalistic piece, you need to have as much ground as possible because there are always going to be people that are going to try to dash your credibility.  The Fader was heavily critisized for this piece, some calling it "The most idiotic hatchetjob of all time."
