Violence against women in the media - 3/13
It is no surprise that violence against women in all forms of media. This includes movies, music, and many other forms of consumable media. One presentation that that stood out to me the most was the violence against women in music. I do agree that violence against women has been normalized in the media for quite some time. In hit songs like Love the way you lie by rapper Eminem, there is discussion about striking women in a violent way. While a lot of this needs no explanation, it is important to note that all of these songs have become arena-ready anthems, with people of all ages screaming the lyrics. While I am an advocate for freedom of expression, there is never any instance where talking like this is acceptable. Eminem released this track in 2010. I can recall a lot of tracks from this time period that are of this nature. To sum up some of my thoughts, there are instances of people treating women like this in real life. The fact that this music exists is partly good because it gets up discussing the violence against women in mainstream society. In the wake of the #Metoo movement, many figures in the entertainment industry were recognized at predators and were consequently fired from their positions.
Figures such as R. Kelly, Harvey Weinstein, and Kevin Spacey were called our for their transgressions against women and many had more than one victim. To look through the magnifying glass to something I am quite knowledgeable about, I want to discuss the case of Jesse Lacey from the band Brand New. The band Brand New is an early 2000s rock act from Long Island, New York. Jesse Lacey was called out for his monstrous behavior and the band was dissolved. There were many themes in his music that discussed relationships and what he wanted to do to the women that wronged him. For those who are not aware, Brand New was a massive act that headlines stadiums and amphitheaters all over the world. This was a big deal for a lot of fans of the genre and band alike. To link some of these acts up, there are bands such as Green Day, My Chemical Romance, and Blink-182 that toured with the band when all of these events supposedly occurred. To give my opinion about this matter, we need everyone to simply speak up about this matter. There is no other solution to fight these issues when they occur. Violence and harassment in art had become a regular occurance and to say it's not happening anymore is incredibly naive.
