Gender stereotypes - 4/28
There is no question that a great deal of progress has been made toward gender equality, and this progress is particularly evident in the workplace. In the period piece known as Mad Men, women are portrayed as being mostly secretaries, as the show takes place in the 1960s. With men running the agency that is portrayed in the show, they always have the final say in every decision that is made, with the women that are involved with the clients only being a small piece. One notable stereotype about men is that they always want to take control of a situation whereas women are more passive. This proven to be untrue, as there are plenty of people of both genders that are this way, and gender is having less to do with exercise of power. Gender roles are something of a problem because, like most, stereotypes oversimplify situations and are almost always inaccurate. Even during the real life eras of Mad Men and other similar pieces, women were just simply not allowed to have the same luxuries as men, creating social injustice.
Stereotypes on their own create injustice, and all stereotypes create their own sets of problems. Another instance of this is there are plenty of women that are taught one of their main purposes is to find a man. This is a problem because it is promoting the idea that one of the main reasons women exist is for a man's pleasure. Another problem with this is it creates a sense of entitlement among men, making them believe they are entitled to a women's time. There are also instances of hyper-masculinity that can also be harmful because it exercises gender roles and stereotypes even further. This is exhibited in the film "Fight Club" as the main characters counter point takes control of him and exhibits anti-social behavior on the behalf of a company of men who want to fight each other for the sole purpose of exhibiting power in their otherwise mundane lives.
Going back to specific gender stereotypes, it is frequently depicted that throughout time, men went to work and women stayed at home and did the housework while taking care of the kids. This is something that should be dismissed as a regular thing because it implies that either gender has a sole purpose. I feel like individuality is one of the main things that should be discussed when talking about any stereotype, as no one's purposes in life have to be based on race, gender, or sexuality. It is a critical thing to make sure nothing is stereotypes because it can lead to involuntary oppression, which is what happens when we do not educate ourselves on a topic.
